Commons Park Opens in Minneapolis

Downtown Minneapolis has a new green space. Commons Park, a 4.2-acre park near U.S. Bank Stadium, opened today.

“This park is for everybody,” said Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges. “What I love seeing is everybody standing on the grass right now, everyone is playing Frisbee and knowing that for generations, it’s going to be true…this park is for Minneapolis, this park is for everyone.”

“This is the kind of space that’s emblematic of everything that we are proud of Minneapolitans, that you are proud to have visitors, friends and to live right next door,” said city council member Jacob Frey.

The Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District will operate the Commons through the end of the year. The non-profit Green Minneapolis is working with the city on an agreement for 2017 and beyond. Green Minneapolis says it has raised more than $14 million for the park’s upkeep.

The west block of the park, which is still under construction, is slated to open next month.
